Mainau is a “flowering garden” located on Bodensee. Mainau belongs to Germany even though it is surrounded by Switzerland. It was about an hour and half drive from Appenzell and was the perfect finish to the day after going to the top of an Alp. I’m sure the island is much more magical in the middle of summer when there are more plants in bloom but somehow I still managed to take plenty of pictures of flowers and butterflies.

The island was packed full of locals, kids and tourists. Lunch was complicated as we didn’t really want the buffet. We saw a sausage stand so I ordered two different things. Turns out I ordered myself Fleischkäse which is basically meat cheese. It came like a sandwich and I recall this was always one of my favorite meals as a child.
